Happy New Year to our Go Like The Wind families!
We are all getting back in to the swing of
things from break.
We are very excited for Martin Luther King
Jr’s. birthday. Every year we have a celebration for his birthday and all the
classrooms do something special! This year the whole school will all get
together in the morning to sing in his honor.
We are also starting our second semester of
serving pizza. This is our largest fundraiser and we thank each of you for your
participation. The upper el classroom has sent a form out for new pizza orders.
They are due back on Friday, January 25th.
The upper el needs help! The recycling
committee would like to remind you of our Bottle Drive. It will be held on
Thursday, January 24 and Friday, January 25, 2008. We need lots of bottles so we
have money for our field trips. Our field trips are coming soon! Just a reminder
- our drop box outside the classroom is not a recycling box. Refundable bottles
only please.
Another reminder “Taking the Next Step” will
be on Tuesday January 22, 2008. This is a meeting for parents to see what the
next level brings to us students. Come meet our great teachers!
There’s a new concert coming up in February!
It is a brand new concert we have never done before. It will be exciting for all
the bands!
Valentine’s Day is coming up! What we do is
we pick a person out of a basket and make one card each day for three days,
saying clues in each card. On the third day they guess who you are! It’s pretty
fun.
Thanks for reading,
Upper El
December
2007
This month in the Upper Elementary classroom many events are taking
place. Everybody is working hard to prepare for the Christmas concert. We must
practice playing our instruments and singing our Spanish Christmas song. If all
goes well, the concert will be a blast! It’s not all work though!
We also get to do many fun things in our classroom. Secret Santa is a favorite
amongst students. What happens is each of the students picks a name of another
student out of a basket. Then they must get a gift for the person that they
have chosen. Our party is on Thursday, December 20. We can’t wait!
We also do a lot of community service at this
time of year. Some examples of the community services that we do are we bake
cookies and deliver them to service oriented organizations and businesses such
as fire stations, humane societies, and hospitals, etc. This year the entire
school will be donating things for the SOS Community Service Center in Washtenaw
County. This is a homeless shelter and crisis center located in Ypsilanti. We
are very proud as a classroom to support these great organizations. We would
also like to thank all the families who donated things for the S.O.S Center and
for our cookie deliveries. There is still time to donate because we will be
delivering next week. Thank you, we appreciate all of your help.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and
a beautifully blessed New Year!
Sincerely,
The Upper Elementary
November News
We would like to thank
everybody for donating school supplies and breakfast cart foods to our
classroom. We would especially like to thank the McHughs for the pencil
sharpener, and the Lee family (Nathan) for donating a computer. The Schmidt and
the Atkins-Smith families both donated new printers. Arlene and Norman Bezrutch
(Sloan and Alexa Belle’s grandparents) have kindly donated two ring necked doves
to the Upper Elementary. We would also like to thank the Shrimankars, the
Martins, and the Rehemtullas for donating to the breakfast cart and the Sweet,
the Lloyd, the Lelli, and the Marx families whom took on the big job of
supporting our recycling these past few months. The Stiers, the Marxs, the
Sweets, the Rostamis, the Ezatis, (Darius’ mom) and the Martins took their time
to work on our bottle drive.
In October, Mrs. Nancylee
Stier came to present the digestive system and Kyle Bunton presented healthy
nutrition to our classroom. Many families kindly donated new books from the
book fair. We would also like to thank the Lelli family for building our Fall
Festival scarecrow.
Our classroom success
shines due to the support from all of our families. We would like to
specifically thank those families mentioned. Another positive contribution to
our classroom were all those who worked and came to our car wash in September.
We would also like to thank some of the lower elementary students for their
support! With the funds raised, we were able to purchase a new laptop for the
Upper Elementary students!
Please remember that the
bottle drive is a constantly on-going fund raiser for the Upper Elementary.
This takes place the third Thursday & Friday every month. Donations from all are
greatly appreciated. Our end of the year field trips can include more
activities when our fundraising is successful. Also, don’t forget to stop by
the breakfast cart in the Upper Elementary wing for a great on-the-go morning
snack.
Thank
you to all who have supported us!

October 2007 - Written by Avantika and Kateri
Upper Elementary is always excited for their first
field trip to Howell Nature Center.
The first night we worked together in 2 team
building events. The first event was called Adventure Scrabble. In this game one
person, the thinker, would stay at the lodge and his or her teammates would go
around Howell Nature Center and answer the teacher’s questions. They would try
to get different letters for various words. The next game we played included
every person who would bring three unique objects from their belongings and went
to the dining room. In the dinning room, our counselor, “Mat”, would ask us to
bring up something to do with his question. The teams with the most points out
of the two games got to eat first.
The 4th graders did the
adventurous low rope games. Some of the games were the chocolate swamp, the
airplane, and the birthday game. An activity the 4th graders did
was shelter building, where they learned that teamwork can accomplish anything.
Another thing they did was orienteering. They learned about compasses and how
they work. Their last events of the day were edible plants, where they tasted
different plants, YUM! And glaciers where they learned about the places at
Howell that were formed by glaciers.
The 5th graders also did the low
rope games, shelter building and orienteering. Then they went on the rock wall,
which was so cool. The rock wall was about 20 feet high. The rock wall
equipment was very heavy and uncomfortable.
The 6th graders also did
orienteering. Then they did some freaky activities. One of them was archery,
where they had to shoot targets with bows and arrows. The last 2 events were the
high ropes course and the tower. The high ropes course is something where you
are attached to ropes and you have to do the challenge that lies ahead. The
tower is a rock climbing wall that is 80 feet high! The trip to Howell Nature
center was fun. I can’t wait till next year.
