FROM GREEN SCHOOL TO EVERGREEN
Go Like the Wind Montessori School has earned Evergreen School status from the Michigan Green Schools. Our school community takes part in recycling and composting. Many green projects have been started including a primary class’s butterfly garden, as well as a garden outside the toddler room and a bat garden.
GARLIC MUSTARD PULL
The garlic mustard plant is considered one of the most destructive invasive plants in our state. As a result, our lower elementary, upper elementary, and middle school students went around our campus pulling the invasive garlic mustard plant, filling 33 bags.
GREEN FIELD TRIPS
Our field trips take environmental learning into account. Middle school students recently traveled to Key Largo, Florida, to study at a marine lab. Our upper elementary students went to Parker Mill County Park to investigate and discover what can determine the overall health of the water.
FRIENDS OF THE BEES
We had a visitor, Jane Levy, visit and speak to our students about honey bee life. Our preprimary students had a great learning experience making their own honey bee art, tasting honey, and learning about the role of the queen bee. Most of all, we are working to mitigate major environmental problems that face our world. The dire condition of the bees is just one of them.
Especially relevant, as an evergreen school, our Earth Day celebrations have included a mural, gardens, and collaborative work that connects our students from toddlers to middle school. In addition, we also celebrated Earth Day by making bird feeders. Students hung the bird feeders on the bushes right outside of our primary classroom windows so we could watch the birds enjoy their sun butter and birdseed. Students from multiple levels working together makes our school special.
"Give the child the possibility of developing according to the laws of his nature, so that he can become strong, and having become strong, can do even more than we dared hope for him."
